Q: What motivated you to get into healthcare?
A: I am a returning student at ASU (majored in Education back in 1980) and now in the Health Policy program.
Q: Why did you join NAHN?
A: In researching a Latino organization in the health field to join, I could not find any except NAHN so I joined as an associate. I am motivated by the desire to learn and to serve my community.
Q: Where are you currently working?
A: In my professional work I am employed at Friendly House as the strategic Development Director. Upon graduation at ASU I plan to continue my studies and obtain an MA.
Q: Tell us something about yourself our membership should know about you? (Academically or professionally)
A: For the past 30 years I have been involved with issues relating to health care. I served on the board of directors for Clinica Adelante, Concilio Latino de Salud, and the Arizona Family Planning Council. In the early 90's I worked with MADRE in New York City coordinating a women's health care campaign titled "HEALTHCARE: We Gotta Have It!"
This year I was appointed to serve on the Maricopa County Board of Health.
Additionally, I currently serve on the Fowler Elementary School District Board of Directors, The Estrella Village Planning Committee, and direct the South Ranch Scholarship Fund.
I have 25 plus years experience in non-profit management including serving as the Executive Director of the Stardust House and Arizona Regional Director of the Cesar Chavez Foundation. I am now looking forward to a career in the health field for what I hope is the last phase of my professional career.
