What motivated you to get into nursing?
I come from a farm worker Family, and I decided when I was very young and working in the AZ hot, hot, very hot sun that I did not wan to work in the hot sun when grew up. Neither of my parents got past the 4th grade in school so was not exposed to a variety of occupational choices as a child. I had not intended to go to school. I had prepared myself to become a secretary so I could work in an air-conditioned office. When I received  full scholarship to The Arizona State University (ASU), I had to choose something different, because those days you had to declare a major upfront. I could have chosen to become a teacher bur I had 10 younger brothers and sisters, and no way did I want to teach kids, so that only left nursing as the other alternative I could think of. Although, nursing was not a passionate choice for me as it was a decision made out of necessity, I have to say that it was one of the most important and rewarding decisions I have ever made in my life. I have gotten to do may things within my nursing career: medical-surgical nursing, community nursing, addiction and mental health counseling, teaching in a nursing program, and now psychiatric nurse practitioner. Nursing has definitely been good to me.

Why did you join NAHN?
Bertha Lopez and I attended a national NAHN conference and were so awed by the number of Latino nurses that we came back enthused about starting a local chapter. Bertha Lopez, Luz Gonshak, and I co-funded this chapter. It took work to get it going but I am really pleased with the membership and work we've been doing.

Where are you currently working?
After 27 years at ASU and the last 20 of them teaching in the CNS and later psych NP program, I retired 2 years ago. I enjoy working, so I am currently employed as a psychiatric nurse practitioner at CPR in south Scottsdale, AZ.

Tell us something about yourself that our membership should know about you? (Academically or professionally)

At the time I got my PhD, I was one of only 4 Latina nurses west of the Mississippi River with a PhD. I'ma pleased with how the number has grown and is growing within our chapter.
